Guide to Tethering Your BlackBerry

I noticed that many BlackBerry owners do not know how to tether their BlackBerry with their computer. Tethering in simpler terms means linking your BlackBerry to your computer to act as a modem so you’ll have a wireless Internet connection no matter where you are. Today, I’m going to give you a guide on how you can set that up in no more than 5 minutes. Before tethering your BlackBerry, you should check if your BIS data plan includes WAP/3G usage or not or else you’ll be charged according to the amount of data you download/upload. This guide will be done with a Windows 7 and should be similar to the Windows Vista.

First and foremost, the BlackBerry Desktop Manager has to be installed in your computer. If you do not have it installed and you don’t have the CD to your BlackBerry Desktop Manager, you can download it here. After you have installed the Desktop Manager, it is also important for you to connect your BlackBerry device to your computer via USB as well so that the standard modem drivers will be installed.

When you have installed both the BlackBerry Desktop Manager and the standard modem drivers, the next step is to add in some initialization commands so that it works with the BlackBerry. To do this, at the Start Menu, right click Computer and select Properties. On the left sidebar, select Device Manager and locate Modems, expand the list and double click the Standard Modem which will then open the properties page for it. Go to the Advanced tab and enter the following initialization command exactly like it is:

Celcom Users:
at+cgdcont=1,”ip”,”celcom3g”

Maxis Users:
at+cgdcont=1,”ip”,”unet”

Once you have entered the initialization command, hit OK to save the command. Note that “celcom3g” and “unet” is the APN for the respective mobile network operator, it varies from one to another so do check with your network operator for the APN.

The next step is to actually test if its working fine so double click the Standard Modem again and go to the Diagnostics tab. Hit the Query Modem button and it should show you Success at the Response field. Hit OK and close your Device Manager.

You are just a step away from connecting to the Internet if you reach this far. All you have to do now is to create a new dial-up connection. To do this, go to your Control Panel which can be found at your Start Menu, select Network and Internet and proceed to Network and Sharing Center. You should then see a Set up a new connection or network, select it. Now you’ll be given a list to choose from, select Set up a dial-up connection. If you are prompt “Which modem do you want to use?” then select Standard Modem. Fill in the fields as follow:

Dial-up phone number: *99#

The User name and Password field:

For Maxis:
User name: maxis
Password: wap

For Celcom:
Just leave the User name and Password field blank.

As for the Connection name, just key in anything you like so as long you can identify it. In my case, I entered Celcom 3G. Do note that the BlackBerry Desktop Manager has to be running with the BlackBerry device connected to work, so if you have both of this done then click Connect and you should be connected! :D

There’s also an easier way to tether your BlackBerry recently. The BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0 SP1 now comes with an IP Modem feature for tethering so it can all be done via the BlackBerry Desktop Manager now. You can download the BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5.0 SP1 via this link. You have two ways to tether your BlackBerry, which would you prefer? :P

Spend Wisely, Else You'll Be in Trouble

You will definitely be in more trouble ahead if you do not start spending and saving wisely. People these days especially the younger generation do not know the means of saving and all they do is just throw money down the drain. There are times when a lot of teenagers would ask on ways they would be able to spend wisely and not wasting their money all the time, this is becoming a common issue with teenagers these days.

There are a lot of ways to achieve it. Most people would probably go through the process of having their hand “itchy”. This means that they would spend a lot whenever they have money around them. What you can do to avoid this is to only have a certain amount of cash with you. A good start to this is to monitor your average spending per day. Let’s say if you were to spend an average of RM50 per day on your food and petrol expenses, you can then estimate to bring about RM70 with you as the little extra money could be handy in times of an emergency.

A very common yet difficult skill is for people to only spend on items that are necessary. You can create either a weekly or monthly list of items that are needed and spend on that. If you were to buy something else which is really costly, do your calculations first before even making the move to purchase it. Besides, you should only buy things you really like. A common mistake that most people make is that they buy things at the point they see it and when they bring it back home, they think it isn’t suitable or dislike it and thus the money is wasted there. The moment you purchase it, there is no turning back as there is no way you are able to return it if you regret it later.

Based on my observation, a majority of us Malaysians really love to eat. We can’t be blamed for this as we are living in a country rich will different cultures and a variety of food. Well, eating isn’t a sin but it does make you spend even more. With so many choices of food, who could resist all the temptations? Even when you’re feeling hungry in the middle of the night, there’s always 24 hours fast food or ‘mamaks’ to serve food to you. An average eater would usually have 3 meals a day but with the change in culture especially when the ‘mamak’ culture is coming about, people have about 4 to 5 meals a day now. People usually give the reason that they are hungry, that’s why they eat a lot. A good tip to prevent this is to eat something more solid as well as affordable. Don’t go and eat food like cupcakes which cost about RM5 each or buying chocolates and desserts that would probably cost you about RM3 to RM5 in which you are already able to have a decent and fulfilling meal like economy mixed rice. Another method that you can prevent yourself from getting hungry really fast is to avoid drinking cold drinks after your meal. Consuming cold drinks will only make your body burn more calories because the body needs to keep warm whenever the temperature drops.

With entertainment in the city, it is also one of the causes of money wasting especially with the teenagers. Entertainments outlets like arcade centers, cyber cafés and clubbing are all considered a waste of money, at least to me. Why visit arcade centers and cyber cafés when you can already entertain yourself with games at home? People who are so addicted to the games usually visit places like this and will end up spending about RM30 a day. Imagine how much you would be able to save if you were to cut down on this kind of activity a month? That’s like RM900 already! Clubbing is also another form of entertainment and the money wasted on alcohol are ridiculously too much to an extent that you would probably end up using a week’s salary. This kind of spending habit can be thrown away with proper discipline and a rational thinking.

Besides, when you are spending wisely it also means that you’ll have extra cash at the end of the day. Saving RM10 a day doesn’t seem much to most people but think further, if you were to save this way for 365 days, you already saved RM3650 a year and within the next ten years, you’ll have RM36500 which would probably be able to fund your child’s education or any other needs as well. Most people do not see or realize the importance of saving even a little. If you aren’t saving any money every single day, I suggest you should start saving today.

In a nutshell, spending habits is something really important in life. Spending wisely should be taught at home from young so that when they grow up, they would know what is meant by spending wisely. A lot of them who just spends their money like nobody’s business are usually those who were pampered when they were young and they would get things they want no matter what and this actually creates a bad habit when they grow up because they would assume that they would want that something and they will get it no matter what. An advice, manage your financial status properly and you will live much more comfortable than most people out there.

New York City Sights

Things to do in New York? If any of you are looking for a site that provides a good information on new york city tours as well as sightseeing, you’ve found the right place as I have a site to recommend in which I think you’ll be able to find information over at this site as well as booking the tickets for the hop-on and hop-off bus.

The site I’m referring to is citysightsny.com where you’ll be able to obtain many information on the get arounds in the city. Most of the general things to do in New York can be found on the links located just below the header. It is really neat as everything is organized in such a tidy manner that it makes information seeking much easier. Even the Points of Interest section is divided into three sections which are Downtown, Uptown and Brooklyn while one of the interesting look-out point is the Top of the Rock Observation Deck. For students, there’s a section on Educational Student Trips which consists of different locations and this should really be useful for any educational institution to plan a school trip as part of an activity.

To conclude, this website is one of the good ones I’ve seen loaded with lots of information for viewers and not only information is the important factor here, the online booking does come in handy for on-the-spot booking without even the need to leave your house. :D

Fong Keow Bak Kut Teh

I know that some or should I say most of you are bak kut teh lovers especially Chinese who loves herbal soup. Apparently, Klang is believed to have the best and original bak kut teh in the Klang Valley. I googled around to find out some of the popular restaurants that serves bak kut teh in Klang and then it came a decision for me to try out Restaurant Fong Keow (Pottery) Bak Kut Teh.

Finding your way here can be a little tricky especially if you have not been to Klang before. I quoted this short guide on getting here from this website to help most of you. If you are coming from Kuala Lumpur or Petaling Jaya, go to the Federal Highway and use the Batu Tiga and Taman Rashna toll plazas. Once you have passed by Taman Rashna toll, keep to the left and follow the signage to Jalan Batu Tiga Lama. Drive along this road and turn right at the traffic light. Go straight along the road and you will pass a small bridge and turn right immediately. You will see a school to your left along this road. Turn right at the junction and you will see the Fong Keow restaurant. The other two restaurants are located just behind it.

Basically the appearance of it when the claypot arrives on your table is somehow good in a sense that the claypot is big and it looks like there’s a lot of ingredients in it. Digging it up and you’ll find that there isn’t much of the ingredients there and the claypot above is after adding stuffs like ‘fu chuk’ and mushrooms. The price of it isn’t too expensive in which for one person it will cost RM10.00. Of course if you plan to add additional ingredients in it then it will cost you probably a couple of ringgits more.

Chinese tea is like a tradition to people who take bak kut teh. It is believed that the tea will help to dilute the fats consumed from the pork. You will have to self-service on this by putting the amount of tea leaves and then adding hot water into the mini pot from kettles stationed nearby your table. Purchasing a box of tea leaves should cost you about RM5.00.

The verdict, I believe that this restaurant is somehow overrated and the soup isn’t that fantastic like what most people say. There should be more restaurants out there in Klang that serves a better bak kut teh with a really strong herbal soup. Until then, I’ll keep all of you updated with the best bak kut teh in Klang when I have the chance to go there again. :D
