Most major shopping malls usually have at least one restaurant that serves Thai food. About a week back, I tried this Thai restaurant Just Thai in 1 Utama. I’ve not return back to this restaurant for more than a year now and this would be a visit after so long.

If you frequently visit 1 Utama, you will probably have at least seen this restaurant at the lower ground floor. If I remember correctly, it is just next to Fish & Co and opposite this restaurant is a video shop as well as a ‘Feng Shui’ shop if I’m not mistaken. So as long as you’re at the lower ground floor of the new wing, you shouldn’t have any problem finding this restaurant.

As a starter, a common favourite would be a bowl of tom yam soup. The one I had was a tom yam soup with seafood. If you like to have your tom yam soup really spicy, sorry to say but this will definitely disappoint you. I’m not too sure if you could request to have it more spicy but even if you could, I don’t think so it can be really spicy though. The soup is a bit sweet with a little of spice to it. Other than that, the amount of seafood in a bowl is quite a lot and it is only priced at RM10.00 per bowl. This is still recommended as a bowl of hot soup will give you a boost in appetite just before your main course.

Moving on to the main course, pineapple fried rice is a must try if you’re in a Thai restaurant. To me, pineapple fried rice is the basics of Thai cuisine and a chef has got to master it no matter what. When I went to Thailand, I can see many people having pineapple fried rice on their table. The pineapple fried rice from this restaurant is not bad but just too sweet. I suppose the pineapple is the main factor for the sweetness because when I took a bite at the pineapple, it is just that sweet. The pineapple itself does play an important role too. Overall, still a good ala carte dish for RM14.00.

I tried their stir-fried minced chicken rice with basil as well. Being the typical me for liking salty dishes, this one certainly is tasty and not too dry with the gravy. A great combination with the fried egg too. This one is just a little bit spicy so no worries if you can’t take spicy food. This is a really simple ala carte dish in their menu but in my opinion, it is a great addition to their menu as this is suitable for those who don’t take spicy food especially with some children. This will cost you RM13.00 per plate.

Just Thai offers a wide range of variety in the food they serve with acceptable quality. Perhaps their dishes would be better than the ala carte, I don’t know but this restaurant can be quite packed during peak hours such as dinner time. Price wise is still affordable for a restaurant inside a shopping mall like 1 Utama, you can’t be expecting the price of food to be below RM10.00 in most restaurants here after all. This restaurant goes to my recommendation list for new restaurants to try out so give it a try!

Have you been to Tropicana City Mall? If you are a big time fan of a Penang cuisine, Penang Village in Tropicana City Mall is where one could get a decent Penang cuisine, well at least that’s my opinion. Are you up for a try?

Penang Village, situated in a secluded corner on the first floor just opposite a noodle restaurant Pho Hoa. If you know where the cinema is, Penang Village is just at the other side of the mall. I’m not quite a fan of Penang Village actually as I’ve tried their branch in Taman Tun Dr Ismail and I find the food there to be on an average standard only. Since then, Penang Village was out of my list until I’ve decided to try again at their latest branch in Tropicana City Mall.

To start things off, their Nyonya Pandan Chicken was the appetizer on my table for the day. Their Nyonya Pandan Chicken is indeed tender and there’s enough moist as I’ve tasted quite a few in various restaurants and most of it turned out to be pretty dry. Moreover, the pandan is really fragrant and it does add a really good taste to the chicken. This one will be highly recommended by me at a price of RM7.90.

Next up we have their Village Special Fried Rice. With a price tag of RM13.90, it is served with fried rice on a banana leaf, prawns made in tempura style, fried chicken and a fried egg. Honestly speaking, their fried rice isn’t anything special, it still is good but I don’t know why they would call this special, perhaps it is the servings that comes with the fried rice so it is labeled as special. Nonetheless, this is still worth a try to me.

Last but not least, their Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang was in my order. First of all, I would give credits to their effort in putting up a good presentation in this but I really don’t think such a long plate is needed for this. Food wise, it was tasty but I expected this to be better since it was a recommendation in their menu. Price? RM13.90 for this.
Penang Village certainly has a lot more room for improvements but it is still worth trying. I would say that this branch in Tropicana City Mall is better than the one in Taman Tun Dr Ismail for some reasons. Price isn’t too expensive and it is considered among the cheaper ones if you were to compare with other restaurants in a shopping mall. If you ask me whether to try this restaurant or not, I’d say yes.

If you are looking for a good Chinese cuisine with an affordable price tag, I have a place that I’ll be able to recommend to you if you have not tried it before. This restaurant is located in Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya.

The Magic Wok Restaurant is popular among the residents in Damansara Jaya and also those who are living around Petaling Jaya. It is no doubt that the food taste good here and it is affordable as well which is what most people are looking for these days especially when the economy isn’t in a good shape. Without further-ado, I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Tofu with Sliced Abalone
Their Tofu with Sliced Abalone was recommended by the waitress and usually can be seen in most of the tables in this restaurant. For only RM12.00, this dish is considered affordable with the taste being decent.

Honey Ginger Chicken
This dish was another delicious one based on my point of view. For RM15.00, this dish isn’t too expensive especially when it is meat and most air-conditioned restaurants would be charging higher than this. This one is another recommended dish.

Sauteed Vegetarian Combination
If you’re bored of just green vegetables, you might want to try this Sauteed Vegetarian Combination as it is a mixture of broccoli, celery, lotus root and many more. The price tag for this dish is at RM12.00.

Aromatic Butter Fish Fillet
Want something that will pamper your taste buds ? The Aromatic Butter Fish Fillet should be liked by most people especially the butter which boosts the taste of it. This dish is priced at RM15.00.
The four dishes will total up to a sum of RM54.00 and adding in drinks and rice would most probably be around RM60.00 which is affordable and I would say most people will agree on this as well. Moreover, the food tastes good and so the it justifies the price tag of the dishes. For me, I will definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Today I’ll be introducing a place where the nasi lemak is good, as far as I know good for all races be it Malay, Chinese or Indian. After all we live in a multi racial country right ? I’m sure food can bring all three races together.

Madam Kwan’s is actually famous and established now. I first tried out Madam Kwan’s in Suria KLCC, their first branch if I’m not mistaken so please correct me if I’m wrong. However, Suria KLCC was quite far from my place and after Madam Kwan’s opened in Mid Valley Megamall, I’m quite a frequent visitor of this restaurant because they offer simple, fast and yet good food.

Nasi Lemak
The nasi lemak is one of the trademark food here in this restaurant. It is also one of the commonly ordered ones in most tables. I like to order their nasi lemak because they serve it really fast, I assume they have already pack ready the nasi lemak and will just heat it up if there’s an order. Of course the deciding factor is always because it is good. This nasi lemak is priced at RM14.20 and yes it does seem to be a little expensive but considering the taste of it, I’m pretty sure people won’t mind paying for it once in a while.
I have also tried their dishes long time ago and it was good as well. The price might be slightly expensive but like I said, some people won’t mind paying a slightly higher price tag for good food. With that, I can say Madam Kwan’s offers a variety of good food in a shopping mall with a slightly higher price tag but it isn’t ridiculously priced.
