The Old Stall Famous Hokkien Prawn Mee

Filed under Food 9 Comments »

I’m sure many of us love prawn mee very much. In Petaling Jaya, Mee Yoke Lim in SS2 Cheow Yang is one of the famous ones known for the good taste in it. During my visit to Singapore last year, I happened to bump in to this stall in Hong Lim Food Centre that sells Hokkien prawn mee. It is really difficult to hunt down some good food in another place that you’re not familiar with without the locals bringing you around so I was actually quite lucky to be able to bump into this stall.

The Old Stall Hokkien Street Famous Hokkien Prawn Mee is located in Hong Lim food centre and in my opinion it isn’t that difficult to find it, locals should be able to find it without any problems while tourists could just ask around and you’ll be there in no time. There’s also a MRT station near this place but I can’t recall which station is it, perhaps someone could enlighten me on this ?

Prawn Mee (dry)

Now most of us actually have eaten prawn mee with soup so this stall offers it in a dry version and is one of the favourites among the regulars here. The prawns were fresh too when I tried it. Now I really couldn’t ask for more. :D

Prawn Mee (with soup)

Now this is the one people are more familiar with, however it does not look the same because the soup is not as thick as the rest. Well there is a reason behind this which will be explained later on. According to the owner Michael, the soup will be boiled early in the morning together with lots of ingredients to have the best possible soup for the prawn mee.

Now I said that there were reasons for the soup not being thick, the owner said that the chili powder provided should be put in to the soup to add more “oomph” in it. The chili powder is also for sale but I am not too sure of the price though.

Me with the owner Michael

Overall I think that this stall offers a really good and satisfying prawn mee. I dare not compare this stall with the rest because I’ve not tried others yet but I dare say that the prawn mee here is good and many celebrities from other country do come to this stall for the prawn mee too as said by the owner. I have also read many other comments on this stall in other blogs and most of it are giving good comments so you can be rest assured that the quality of the prawn mee here is good. :D

Madam Kwan’s Restaurant

Filed under Food 3 Comments »

Today I’ll be introducing a place where the nasi lemak is good, as far as I know good for all races be it Malay, Chinese or Indian. After all we live in a multi racial country right ? I’m sure food can bring all three races together. :D

Madam Kwan’s is actually famous and established now. I first tried out Madam Kwan’s in Suria KLCC, their first branch if I’m not mistaken so please correct me if I’m wrong. However, Suria KLCC was quite far from my place and after Madam Kwan’s opened in Mid Valley Megamall, I’m quite a frequent visitor of this restaurant because they offer simple, fast and yet good food.

Nasi Lemak

The nasi lemak is one of the trademark food here in this restaurant. It is also one of the commonly ordered ones in most tables. I like to order their nasi lemak because they serve it really fast, I assume they have already pack ready the nasi lemak and will just heat it up if there’s an order. Of course the deciding factor is always because it is good. This nasi lemak is priced at RM14.20 and yes it does seem to be a little expensive but considering the taste of it, I’m pretty sure people won’t mind paying for it once in a while. :)

I have also tried their dishes long time ago and it was good as well. The price might be slightly expensive but like I said, some people won’t mind paying a slightly higher price tag for good food. With that, I can say Madam Kwan’s offers a variety of good food in a shopping mall with a slightly higher price tag but it isn’t ridiculously priced.

Sukico Hainan Cafe

Filed under Food 12 Comments »

Although I’ve not tried the Hainan coffee from Sukico Hainan Cafe in Damansara Utama, I can say it should be good since it is quite popular among the residents or frequent visitors of Damansara Utama.

Sukico Hainan Cafe

Locating it shouldn’t be difficult, you just have to find the McDonalds here as it is opposite McDonalds and very near to the Standard Chartered Bank, it is SS21/39 to be exact. You can watch out for the yellow colour board and you won’t go wrong. However, parking around Damansara Utama can be a problem especially during working hours.

Chicken Cordon Bleu

I’ve actually been to Sukico Hainan Cafe a few times and quite a fan of their Western food. This may be a Hainan cafe but their Western food is quite good to be honest. This Chicken Cordon Bleu with cheese in it is one of my favourites here. This one is priced at RM13.80.

Hainanese Fried Rice

Well there are a lot of styles if you mention fried rice so it is actually more or less the same. If you feel like eating fried rice, look no further as the Hainanese Fried Rice here in Sukico is really fried to satisfy most people. This Hainanese Fried Rice is priced at RM7.80.

Chicken Chop Rice

Actually it should have been a Hainanese Chicken Chop Rice to be reviewed but didn’t realize there were two chicken chop rice here. This one is the Western style but no worries, it is still that good and so far I have not much if none at all complaints for the food here in Sukico. This one is priced at RM9.00.

Being just a small cafe in an area like Damansara Utama is not easy. The food served here is good enough to have returning customers and regulars to keep this cafe running. Sukico Hainan Cafe has similar concepts with Kluang Station and Old Town White Coffee Cafe but it is just a slightly cheaper version of it minus the air-conditioning. Sukico Hainan Cafe also opens early at 7.30am for those who would like to have breakfast so you might want to try it out too for their breakfast menu. Verdict, Sukico Hainan Cafe offers a good value for their food judging by the taste of it as well as the price. :D

King Crab Restaurant

Filed under Food 2 Comments »

I’m not too sure if majority of you had heard about this restaurant or not but in my opinion I think quite a lot know about this restaurant especially those living around Petaling Jaya.

King Crab

King Crab Restaurant is located in Taman Mewah Jaya, easily spotted along the highway and it is opposite the Kelana Jaya LRT station. You won’t have trouble finding it too as their signboard is really huge and “attractive”. On special occasions, you’ll have to either reserve a table or get there early as it will be full around 7.00pm to 7.30pm. What’s good here ? Perhaps the name of this restaurant says it all.

Vegetables with Superior Soup

I suppose nobody comes to this restaurant for their vegetables. However consuming vegetables is good for health and therefore you may just order any vegetables you like. This one here is suitable for those who dislike really dry vegetables, fret not there’s soup for this vegetable. This one here is priced at RM12.00.

Stewed Beancurd with Mushroom and Salted Egg Yolk

Again beancurd isn’t what people are coming here for but it is tasty. Served with vegetables so that if you can’t get enough of vegetables, this beancurd serves for vegetables for you. Taste wise for this is good because the gravy does blend well with the mushroom and salted egg yolk. This one is priced at RM12.00.

Baked Fish Fillet with Crunchy Butter

Butter is now commonly used in many dishes for example butter chickens and butter prawns, so here’s a fish fillet with crunch butter. The fish fillet isn’t anything special but once it is coupled with the crunchy butter, it is that good especially when you can enjoy the crunchy butter. This one is priced at RM15.00.

Sang Ha Mee
Braised Noodles with Giant River Prawns

Braised Noodles with Giant River Prawns or rather known as “Sang Ha Mee” is one of the popular noodles in big restaurants, the enjoyment of the giant prawns is something not to be forgotten. I have to say that King Crab’s Braised Noodles with Giant River Prawns is good but the price isn’t cheap, well it isn’t cheap in other restaurants too. This one is priced at RM90.00 for two giant river prawns.

Okay now you must be wondering where are the crabs, well I did tried out their crab but sadly I do not have any photos of it. I can tell you that the crabs tastes good on my visit here and definitely I would recommend it to anyone looking for seafood restaurants and don’t mind paying a slightly higher price tag for good food. Final verdict, excellent and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

Dine at Backofen

Filed under Food 7 Comments »

If you’re looking for a change because you are just bored of Asian food, perhaps you should try Backofen which serves their food in Austrian style. Although the food may not look that much different of a Western delight, it is still good. :)

Backofen

Backofen is located in Desa Sri Hartamas. For those regulars who always hang around this area would be able to locate this restaurant quickly but for those who aren’t regulars, it might take quite some time unless you have a good sense of direction, however with the address of the lot then it shouldn’t be much of a problem.

Spaghetti Carbonara

This Spaghetti Carbonara is served with turkey ham and obviously in white sauce. Simple it may look but it is good and the white sauce is really rich so you might get bloated if you aren’t a big eater. The Spaghetti Carbonara here is priced at RM11.00.

Chicken Chop

Their Chicken Chop or rather known as “Huhner Schnitzel” uses a skinless boneless chicken fried in breadcrumbs and served with potato salad. Chicken chop might be simple but it is much better than any ordinary chicken chop plus the breadcrumbs do add a little boost in it. This Chicken Chop is priced at RM13.00.

Grilled Chicken

Chicken lover but do not want it dry like the previous Chicken Chop ? Then this Grilled Chicken might be for you since it is served over mushroom sauce and crumbed potatoes. The mushroom sauce tastes good and is a good pairing with the boneless grilled chicken, what more can I ask for ? The Grilled Chicken here is priced at RM13.00.

When the food is good, it is no surprise that there will be no leftovers on the plate (well maybe a little). I find this restaurant to be quite a good place to dine especially if you want a quiet atmosphere. Price wise is not too bad ranging from around RM10.00 to RM15.00, there isn’t many restaurants around this area that have this kind of price tag. Moreover the food is good so the price shouldn’t be considered expensive for a satisfying meal. :D

Fong Lye Taiwan Restaurant

Filed under Food 13 Comments »

This post was actually posted in my blog when it was hosted with my previous web hosting provider. I am now recovering that same post by popular demand on Fong Lye Taiwan Restaurant located in The Gardens Mid Valley. I took a look at the recent keywords that led visitors to my site and I still see quite a number of people searching for this restaurant.

Fong Lye

So this restaurant is usually packed and sometimes there might be quite a long queue too back then, I am not sure how is it now as I’ve not been to The Gardens for quite some time. My first impression on this restaurant from outside is the great atmosphere and the bright lightings, I guess not many likes a dim lighting in a restaurant unless they are looking for a romantic surrounding. Better lightings also help publishers be it from magazines or blogs to be able to capture better photos. :D

Their tea pot set is quite unique in my opinion, not your conventional tea pot set. Presentation is important too to give a better impression to customers. Without wasting some precious time, let’s move on to the food shall we ?

Taiwan Braised Beef Noodle

Their Taiwan Braised Beef Noodle was actually ordered by my sister because I do not eat beef (well once in a while). I can’t recall her saying that it is really good but I am very sure that there weren’t any bad comments on this, I guess this noodle is average and not enough to drive someone shouting “Excellent !”. This Taiwan Braised Beef Noodle is priced at RM18.80.

Fried Fish Fillet with Tomato and Fried Egg

Now this Fried Fish Fillet with Tomato and Fried Egg is one of their chef’s recommendation. I tasted this and what I can say is the fried fish fillet with tomato is a good combination along with the fried egg. Since it is a chef’s recommendation, first time visitors should try it. This Fried Fish Fillet with Tomato and Fried Egg is priced at RM19.80.

Taiwan Spare Ribs Rice in Sweet & Sour Sauce

This one is also another chef’s recommendation. My way of describing this one is it tastes similar to those spare ribs rice outside but of course much more tasty. If you are craving for spare ribs on the day you visit this restaurant, don’t hesitate to order this. This Taiwan Spare Ribs Rice in Sweet & Sour Sauce is priced at RM18.80.

Taiwan Chicken Chop Rice

So this Taiwan Chicken Chop Rice was what I order on my first visit here to this restaurant. My first bite on the chicken chop reminds me of the chicken chop of Uncle Bob found in most ‘pasar malam’. However the chicken chop served in this Taiwan Chicken Chop Rice is more crispy and in a way tastier than Uncle Bob’s. If you are a chicken lover then go for this. This Taiwan Chicken Chop Rice is priced at RM18.80.

Taiwan Baked Sausage

Last but not least a side order on my visit here was their Taiwan Baked Sausage. Well to be honest I don’t find this to be anything special, perhaps I just don’t know how to appreciate sausages, what’s more is this is a Taiwanese style. This Taiwan Baked Sausage is priced at RM5.80.

Overall I think that this restaurant offers some decent tasting food. However, the price isn’t too affordable so I will consider this restaurant to be quite pricey. Well a restaurant in The Gardens should be expensive as expected, as long as the food is good then paying a high price once in a while should be alright. By the way, Fong Lye Taiwan Restaurant has two other branches, one in Jalan Imbi and the other in Desa Sri Hartamas. So how many of you have tried Fong Lye Taiwan Restaurant ? Perhaps you could give your own feedback too. :)
